What is Speech Pathology and how can it help?

Speech Pathology supports both children and adults to improve their communication skills. This can include speaking clearly, understanding and using language, expressing thoughts, and using non-verbal communication like gestures and facial expressions. At Anywhere Speech Pathology in Maroubra and Matraville, I work with individuals of all ages—helping children with speech and language development, and supporting adults with communication, literacy, or social interaction challenges. The goal is to build confidence and improve everyday communication at home, school, work, and in the community.

What are the signs that someone might need Speech Pathology?

Children may benefit from Speech Pathology if they have delayed speech and language development, difficulty pronouncing sounds, limited vocabulary, trouble following instructions, or frustration when trying to communicate.

Adults may seek support for difficulties with speaking clearly, finding the right words, following conversations, voice changes, or challenges with reading, writing, or social communication. If communication feels difficult at any age, Speech Pathology can help.

What happens in a Speech Pathology assessment?

An assessment begins with a conversation to understand your concerns and goals. I then use a mix of observation, conversation, and formal tools (as needed) to assess areas such as speech sounds, language, comprehension, social communication, and literacy. For adults, I may also assess functional communication and workplace needs. The results guide a personalised therapy plan tailored to your goals.

Do I need a referral to see a Speech Pathologist?

No referral is needed to book a private appointment. However, if you plan to claim a Medicare rebate through a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan, you’ll need a referral from your GP. For NDIS clients, you may need supporting documentation for your plan manager or support coordinator.

How often are therapy sessions needed?

Therapy frequency depends on individual goals and needs. Some people benefit from weekly sessions, while others may attend fortnightly or monthly. During your first session, I’ll discuss a plan that suits your schedule and supports meaningful progress.
